The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip has no end in sight, at least in the short term. The bloody battles between the two sides have been going on for decades and, although it seemed to have been neutralised and Hamas’ terrorist attacks had slowed down, they have now flared up more fiercely than ever. In the face of all this, it is time to remember how and when Israel was founded, which has led to the current situation.

In the early 20th century, while Jewish sought the founding of a state of their own, Palestine was within the Ottoman Empire, something that ended when, after the end of the First World War, the United Kingdom took control of the nation through the League of Nations in 1922.

Tensions rose over the next few years as waves of Jewish immigration led to various conflicts, especially once the Nazi persecution of Jewish began. It also did not help that the British repeatedly reneged on their promises, which led to terrorist attacks and massacres on both sides.

The United Nations finds a ‘solution’ to the conflict, and Israel is born

Finally, in 1947, the United Kingdom opted to find a solution, once the Second World War had ended and Nazi Germany had been dismembered. Thus, the United Nations studied the situation and reached a verdict and it was decided to divide Palestine in two. Shortly afterwards, on 14 May 1948, the state of Israel was founded, and a day later it became embroiled in a war with its Arab neighbours Jordan, Egypt, Syria and Iraq.

Israel eventually ended up occupying almost 77 percent of the territory that had hitherto belonged to Palestine. It was not until 1967 that the Israelis were involved in another battle, the so-called Six-Day War, which allowed them to occupy the Gaza Strip and other points such as Sinai, the West Bank and the Golan Heights.

In a subsequent agreement after the Yom Kippur War, Egypt regained Sinai, but Israel retained the Gaza Strip, something that still lingers today and remains a matter of debate in international politics.
