When was mpox a public health emergency? appeared on www.thelancet.com by The Lancet.
discussed challenges faced by (WHO)over when to declare an outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). They state the PHEIC declaration for mpox (previously known as monkeypox) could reclaim WHO’s “authority in global disease control and demonstrate to states and the global health community that (WHO)can act in this central role and is not afraid to use the powers it has been endowed with”.
Yet, with the disease now probably endemic in many regions outside of Africa, was an earlier declaration warranted?
Third, large transmission events occurred early on, greatly enhancing distribution of this disease internationally.

Finally, with the first case reported on May 6, 2022, one could expect that the approaching summer would make the likelihood of further large international transmission events inevitable.
—maybe the answer is that (WHO)becomes less political and more nimble.
I declare no competing interests.

Monkeypox was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the (WHO)Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on July 23, 2022. This is the seventh declaration of a PHEIC since 2005. The PHEIC is governed by the International Health Regulations (IHR). A PHEIC should be declared if a disease outbreak is an extraordinary event; when it constitutes a public health risk to other states through international spread; and when a coordinated international response is potentially required.
