Who will go at No. 1? We asked Panthers fan Luke Combs appeared on www.tennessean.com by Matthew Leimkuehler.
Who should the Carolina Panthers take with the first pick in this week’s NFL Draft? Country hitmaker Luke Combs has thoughts.
The two-time reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year and North Carolina native knows his team needs a quarterback. Still, it remains unknown which of the four projected first-round QBs — Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson and Will Levis — the Panthers plan to select with the top 2023 slot.
If Combs ran the franchise, he would set sights on one candidate above the rest.
“I’m hoping it’s C.J. Stroud,” Combs told the Tennessean earlier this month before headlining two nights at Nissan Stadium. “I feel like he torched the best defense in college football [when Stroud’s Ohio State played Georgia in the 2022 College Football Playoff]. Almost took ’em down. I feel like if we’re going to take a quarterback, which we’re going to without a doubt, I can’t imagine taking anyone else.”
Combs continued, noting Young’s under-sized 5’10” frame: “I mean, obviously Bryce Young is great at what he does, but he’s really tiny. Not that it can’t be done, but I imagine a guy that size getting tackled by Myles Garrett and I can’t imagine that going well … but there’s guys like [Drew] Brees, who got it done.”
Earlier this year, the Panthers traded standout wide receiver D.J. Moore and a haul of draft picks to the Chicago Bears for the No. 1 selection. As for which QB may go off the board first? Combs will need to tune in Thursday evening like everyone else to see who his beloved team picks to be the future of the franchise.
The 2023 NFL Draft kicks off at 7 p.m. CST on ABC and ESPN.
