There has been a lot of speculation lately about Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, potentially bidding for the Washington commanders, an NFL team. However, recent reports suggest that Bezos has been barred from providing a bid for the team. The reason for this seems to be a beef between Bezos and Dan Snyder, the owner of the team. Bezos owns the Washington Post, which has been reporting on the alleged wrongdoings of Snyder, and it’s possible that Snyder isn’t a fan of Bezos or his publication.
It’s important to note that Snyder doesn’t have any shareholders or investors that he needs to keep up with, so he doesn’t have to sell the team to Bezos if he doesn’t want to. In fact, Bezos could potentially be cut out altogether.
So, why would Bezos want to own an NFL team in the first place? Well, for one, it’s seen as cool to be part of the billionaires club that owns these teams. But there are also some compelling financial reasons to do so.
For example, the Green Bay Packers had total expenses of $501 million last year, but they received national revenue of $347 million, which is about 70% of the way to profitability before they even played a snap. This revenue gets divided between all the teams before the season even starts, so owning an NFL team puts you in a good position financially from the get-go.
NFL games are also incredibly popular, with 82 of the 100 most-watched programs in 2022 being NFL broadcasts. This is more than any other sport or program.
Finally, the franchise value of NFL teams tends to go up year over year. While there may be down years here and there, teams don’t tend to lose value overall. This makes owning an NFL team a relatively safe place to put your money, at least compared to other investments that may be more volatile.
Overall, while the reports of Bezos bidding for the Washington commanders seem to be premature, there are certainly some compelling reasons for billionaires to want to own an NFL team. Whether Bezos ends up making a bid for this team or another one remains to be seen, but the allure of owning a sports franchise is certainly there.
