Why PlayStation Fans Should Keep an Eye on September 6

Many PlayStation fans believe Sony will host its next major PlayStation Showcase soon, and there are two major reasons for this. The first is that Sony has hosted a PlayStation Showcase every year for the past three or so years, so it’s unlikely to be breaking tradition now. This is perhaps especially true given that its next major release, God of War Ragnarok, still has a ton it needs to show off. The second comes from decently reliable rumors suggesting that it is happening specifically on September 8.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

To be clear on terminology, a PlayStation Showcase is a big event for Sony, while State of Plays are more like updates. It’s essentially its E3 replacement, dating back before COVID put E3 in an odd position to begin with. The PlayStation Showcase is essentially a big State of Play, but whereas the latter is usually around the 20-30 minute mark, a Showcase is likely an hour or two, at least, of multiple games. These are functionally two different events, but how Sony approaches them typically follows a key pattern when it comes to announcing them.

The chances of a new PlayStation Showcase happening soon are high, but that leaves two major questions as to when it’ll take place and what will be shown. The latter is impossible to predict, as many are hoping for God of War and some of Sony’s 2023 games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but when that PS Showcase announcement will come isn’t nearly as hard to possibly predict.

When Will Sony Announce the PlayStation Showcase 2022?

Occasionally, Sony will announce something a week in advance. This is rare, but not unheard of, for the company. One PlayStation Showcase was announced a week in advance, but given that September 1 passed with no announcement, that means Sony is either not following this pattern or this event is not taking place on September 8. Assuming it’s not the latter means Sony may be going with its other pattern: typically speaking, Sony will announce something like a State of Play or PlayStation Showcase two days before the event actually happens. The company tends to host these events on Wednesdays or Thursdays, announcing them two days before on Monday and Tuesday. That’s why September 6 is so important; if the rumors are legit, this is the likeliest date (a Tuesday) fans will know for sure.

It makes perfect sense too, as Thursdays tend to be a little more common than Wednesdays, and September 8 is a Thursday. Furthermore, September 5 is Labor Day and so any announcement then doesn’t really make sense for Sony’s US audience. It’s not impossible, sure, but any betting man should put money that the next PlayStation Showcase will be announced on September 6.

This is also super important for managing fan expectations. Oftentimes, fans will erroneously treat rumors as facts, and hold companies responsible for something they have no control over. Sure, a company could deny rumors publicly, and this does happen sometimes, but a company like Sony would never rest if it had to dispel every rumor out there. Fans have every right to be excited about a PlayStation Showcase and everything that could be announced there, but they don’t have the right to be upset *IF* these PS Showcase rumors don’t prove true. Luckily, fans don’t really have to wait until September 7 or September 8 to see if these prove true or not. It’s a simple approach to managing expectations: if September 6 passes without an announcement of the PlayStation Showcase, it almost certainly isn’t happening on September 8.

Now, that doesn’t mean the PlayStation Showcase won’t take place later this month, as Sony could wish to distance itself from Disney and Marvel Games Showcase as well as the Ubisoft Forward, but since the current plan is reportedly September 8, this means fans can temper their expectations by Tuesday, September 6.

The PlayStation Showcase event is rumored for September 8.
