WILBRAHAM, Mass. (WWLP) – The man who is accused of shooting a Wilbraham Police Officer will be back in court on Thursday.
Michael Ortega was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with Wilbraham Police at his home on Old Carriage Drive back on January 20th. Police say that when officers got there they exchanged gunfire with Ortega, who was inside the home for several hours. This exchange left Ortega wounded and an officer was caught in the crossfire.
Wilbraham Police Officer Cameron Prosperi, who sustained a gunshot wound during the shooting, was brought to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Prosperi was released from the hospital last week however, he is still recovering from his wounds.
Ortega is facing charges of assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon. He is expected in Palmer District Court at 11 a.m. for a detention hearing.
