'Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man': Jeff Trammell and Mel Zwyer talk Ironman cameo; Robert Downey Jr’s MCU return in 'Avengers: Doomsday' | – The Times of India appeared on timesofindia.indiatimes.com by Karen Pereira.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to experience yet another seismic shift as Robert Downey Jr trades in his Ironman suit to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain – Doctor Doom.
His return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will follow a surprise Ironman appearance in the animated web series, ‘Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man’. Since the announcement of RDJ’s return to the big screen, fans have been left divided on resurrecting the beloved character, after he met his end in the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
Several fans have debated the recent buzz about legacy characters, including Chris Evans’ Captain America re-entering the MCU. Jeff Trammell and Mel Zwyer, the creative minds behind Marvel’s latest animated projects, weighed in on this discussion with ETimes.
Trammell, the showrunner for ‘Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man,’ expressed enthusiasm for Downey Jr’s return, saying, “I think it’s cool. I’m really excited. The fact that we’re doing a show that’s like this, I would feel like a hypocrite if I didn’t embrace it.”
Mel Zwyer, known for his work on Spider-Man projects, echoed Trammell’s excitement. “I’m personally as excited as the fans,” he said, acknowledging the nostalgia and anticipation surrounding these character revivals.
When discussing how their own series stands out amidst a vast landscape of Spider-Man adaptations, Zwyer highlighted the importance of innovation. “That was a challenge because there’s been so much great Spider-Man content. Our goal was to make a moving comic book—to take a comic book and bring it to life,” he explained.
With the Spider-Man and Daredevil rooftop battle, depicted in the show and its striking parallels to ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, we asked the duo if the animated series connects to the larger MCU. Trammell clarified, “We’ve designed (the series) as a self-contained story, but because we are a self-contained story I think that there’s a chance to build out our kind of Marvel Universe adjacent to the sacred timeline. I think it allows us to take new paths and new risks and kind of see some things that we may have seen before but change them up which I think is so much of what the show is at its core.”
The return of RDJ and Evans to play variants of their characters within Marvel’s multiverse continues to be a topic of intense speculation. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, directed by the Russo Brothers, is currently gearing up to go on floors in March. The film is slated for a 2026 release. It will be followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘ which will hit screens in 2027.
