The Dartmouth fifth-grader’s meeting with English singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran was an unexpected but a wonderful surprise.
Nora McNeil, 11, was at Boston Children’s Hospital on an in-patient basis for a few days last week and was being discharged May 23 when her child life specialist asked if the McNeils would like to stay a few hours longer to meet a special guest singer.
“She was happy to stay since it was only going to be a few hours’ difference and found out just a short while later it was going to be Ed Sheeran coming to the hospital,” said Nora’s mother, Shannon McNeil.
Nora, Shannon and Scott McNeil had no idea they were going to meet a megastar like Sheeran who would bring smiles to children both in person and via Zoom.
“Ed truly lit up the room with a kind ease that brought the biggest smiles to patients and parents alike,” Shannon said.
Signing a lifeline
Nora had to get a cellphone after she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes — also known as juvenile diabetes — to help manage it, and she had Sheeran sign it for her. They also joked about how they were both gingers, since they both have red hair.
It was also a big deal for Nora that Sheeran and Taylor Swift collaborate on songs together.
“She said, ‘oh my God, he’s like best friends with Taylor Swift‘ because she knows from songs they listen to that they collaborate a lot on their music,” Shannon said.
Shannon and Nora’s aunt Katelyn are also big fans of Sheeran’s, having seen him in concert in Foxboro last year, and the McNeils often listen to his music at home.
She said his visit put such a big smile on Nora’s face as they gathered in the small studio at the hospital where the talented musician played a song for her daughter on his acoustic guitar after some difficult days.
A visit to remember
Sheeran visited for about 30 minutes, answering all sorts of questions from the children gathered in the studio and those watching via Zoom in their rooms and played his music for about 15 minutes.
She said he was so very patient and kind and wasn’t in a rush and signed autographs for everyone.
He also talked about how he was born with a stutter and how he used to feel that dealing with it would be insurmountable, she said, and believes it was his way to send a message about overcoming challenges.
Nora has a struggle ahead of her, but Shannon said she is happy to be home with her sister and her pets and returned to school Tuesday.
When he sang his song “Perfect,” Shannon said he had everyone crying.
“I don’t think it was a coincidence that he sang ‘Perfect’ for us,” she said. “It felt much more like a reassuring message to each and every one of those kids, going through some of the hardest days of their lives, that they’re absolutely perfect exactly as they are.”
