Cody Simpson shares inspiring message in Olympic fight appeared on 7news.com.au by Sarah Burt.

Popstar-turned-swimmer Cody Simpson has taken to Instagram to tell his fans he’s not giving up on his Olympic dreams, and he is using an obscure filmmaker for inspiration.

After failing to place in the 100m butterfly (his specialist event) at Swimming Australia’s recent world championship trials, Simpson now needs to focus on the Olympic trials in June next year.

There is a long road ahead but Simpson is not going down without a fight. And he has turned to famous German filmmaker Werner Herzog and former US president Theodore Roosevelt for inspiration.

“Three years ago I was a musician with a vision of returning to my first love, swimming,” Simpson said on Instagram.

“Having swum no more than a few laps for the better part of 10 years, I made the decision to sacrifice what I had built to pursue it.

“Two years later, I became an Australian Dolphin, qualifying to rep my country at the Commonwealth Games. I’m now in the final year of my 4-year journey toward the Paris Olympics, the ultimate dream.

“Don’t be afraid of your dreams. They are what life is all about. Come along for the ride, and please pursue your own dreams too.”

The 26-year-old spoke to the camera, walking next to a training pool.

“Some of you might know me from my endeavours in music over the years, some of you might know me from my recent pursuit of competitive swimming, some of you might not know me or follow me at all,” he said.

“Either way, I just wanted to invite you along on this journey of mine as I attempt to do something.

“Even in the greatest pursuits there’s nobility in success and there is also nobility in failure.

“It’s by doing something like this, you’re putting yourself in a position in which you’re vulnerable and exposing yourself to two potential outcomes.

“You are Theodore Roosevelt’s Man in The Arena, and Werner Herzog once said every man must pull a boat over a mountain at least once in his life, and I’d like to invite you all to follow me as I attempt to pull the boat over what I consider to be my mountain.

The reference to Herzog is certainly unusual.

The director is known for his ambitious plans and in 1982, in the movie Fitzcarraldo, Herzog took that to an extreme level when he ordered his crew to carry a 320-ton steamboat over a steep mountain.

Simpson also posted the full passage of The Man in The Arena on his Instagram story a short time later.

“Day one training back, my final year preparing for the Australian Olympic trials for the Paris Games,” he said.

Simpson’s mother was quick to respond.

“Proudest mum ever,” she said, while adding love hearts.

And swimming coach David Marsh said: “Let’s go Cody!! Fully behind you!”

Fans also cheered Cody on.

“It’s so inspiring to see someone who follows his dreams ?? keep rocking and swimming, I’m a huge fan since ‘cause you are on my mind ?’,” one fan said.

Another wrote: “Needed to hear that so badly! a journey of a thousand miles begins with a simple step. I believe in you Cody.”
