FC Dallas lost to Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup and many of the players were keen to take a picture with Lionel Messi after that game which their fans were not happy about

FC Dallas players have been criticised for trying to get a photo with Inter Miami star Lionel Messi.

The two teams contested a thrilling Round of 16 Leagues Cup tie at Texas’ Toyota Stadium in which Tata Martino’s men edged on penalties. The World Cup winner produced another stellar performance as his two goals helped his team secure a 4-4 draw after extra time, before winning the shootout 5-4.

The reaction of Dallas’ players prompted some angry tweets from their fans who were shocked to see how eager they were to take a snap with Messi after he had just defeated them. “You get knocked out of a competition then you form a line to take pictures with the guy responsible lmao this is unheard of,” one fan wrote.

Another asked in disbelief: “They were supposed to be sad but look at this?” Another wrote: “They don’t care that they just lost.” Messi continued his fine goalscoring form as he opened things after just six minutes after latching onto a cross for Jordi Alba. He produced a trademark curling left-foot finish into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

For the first time in his Inter Miami career, Messi and his teammates were trailing in the game, not once but twice. They went into halftime down 2-1 before Dallas extended it to 3-1 in the 63rd minute following Alan Velasco’s free kick.

And while Inter pulled back a goal soon after, some sloppy play saw Robert Taylor turn the ball into his own net. The game entered its final 10 minutes with Inter Miami trailing 4-2 when they were awarded a free kick.

Messi swung the ball into the box and it was turned into his own net by Marco Farfan, giving them a lifeline. Just five minutes later, the seven-time Balon d’Or winner stepped up to take another free kick with Inter Miami trailing 4-3.

This one was within shooting range and as he did on his debut against Cruz Azul, Messi whipped the ball into the top corner to level the match for his team and send the game into extra time. The football legend converted the first of five successful spot-kicks in the shootout as Miami advanced to the next round.

The win marked the first time the club secured a victory over Dallas and they will face either Charlotte FC or Houston Dynamo in the quarter-finals. Messi has now scored seven goals in just four appearances for his new team and boss Martino is thrilled with the start he has made to life in Miami.

“We have the best player in the world. That can’t be ignored. When we have our moments, the team is lethal,” he said. “This question always gets asked in the places where he is. Someone can bet on what Barcelona would’ve looked like without Messi, what the Argentina national team would look like without Messi or anywhere he’s been. Fortunately, we have him, and today he once again showed he’s a tremendously important player.”
