The ninth annual Pyro’s Push it Up Trail Run took place this past Saturday high in the mountains north of New Castle on the Flat Tops Wilderness area.
There were three races of varying distances from a 2-mile family fun run and walk, to the more challenging 5- and 8-mile courses run on jeep roads and single track trails.
The races take place each year in honor of Captain William “Pyro” DuBois of New Castle, who passed away in December of 2014 while flying a mission in the Middle East for the United States Air Force. All proceeds from Saturday’s races will go toward scholarships for Air Force pilots in training and financial aid for their families.
The following are the top ten results from each of the three races run on Saturday (*denotes female runners):
2-Mile, (59 total participants): 1. Xavier Coombs, 22 minutes, 18 seconds; 2. Layton Wise, 22:41; 3. Xanadu Moldenhauer* (Women’s winner) 23:06; 4. Katie Laven*, 23:51; 5. Ariana Cornejo*, 24:38; 6. Christopher Adams, 25:24; 7. Brynn Dewitte*, 26:33; 8. Gabbi Varela*, 26:38; 9. Olin Lundin, 27:56; 10. Anders Lundin, 28:28.
5-Mile (55 total participants): 1. Derek Spatola, 32 minutes, 51 seconds; 2. Tara Dewitte* (women’s winner) 40:18; 3. Jonah Kelley, 45:02; 4. Caesar Nafrada, 45:26; 5. Coby Fan, 45:54; 6. Jacob DeGrave, 46:12; 7. Johnny Utah, 47:21; 8. Brandon DuBois, 47:26; 9. Oliver Casis, 48:27; 10. Sydney DeGrave*, 48:45.
8-Mile (27 total participants): 1. Vaughn Janckila, 1 hour, 2 minutes, 28 seconds; 2. Bernie Boettcher, 1:02:52; 3. Jereme Leafe, 1:03:36; 4. Zach Turner, 1:11:10; 5. Eddie Murray, 1:16:26; 6. Kevin Mullins, 1:16:47; 7. Zach Derwin, 1:20:06; 8. Anne Swanson* (women’s winner) 1:21:26; 9. Kristjan Danis, 1:23:22; 10. Kevin Manley, 1:24:19.
Race directors Donna and Ham DuBois said next year’s race, which will be the 10th annual Pyro’s, will be run on August 10. Mark the date.
Dog Day 5k
This coming Saturday, Aug. 19, the Colorado Animal Rescue will hold its annual Dog Day 5k Run/Walk at Two Rivers Park in Glenwood. Registration begins at 8 a.m. near the band shell at Two Rivers, with the race starting promptly at 9 a.m. The course is of the out and back variety on the Rio Grande Trail. All proceeds from the event will go to help the furry inhabitants of the shelter. Preregister for $30 at coloradoanimalrescue.org, or on race morning. Dogs on a leash are welcome to join their human companions.
